TWYCROSS ZOO

“Twycross Zoo - East Midland Zoological Society Limited (EMZS) is the second most attended gated tourist attraction in the East Midlands, attracting in excess of 500,000 visitors per year. Twycross Zoo hosts the most comprehensive collection of primate species in the western world and in 2006 was established as the ‘World Primate Centre’. We currently host the only Bonobo collection in the UK, with three males, six females and two young.

Twycross Zoo currently supports on average fifty research projects per annum, with a select number coming from overseas researchers. In addition, the Zoo hosts the Conservation Welfare Fund, which has supported 44 separate projects since its inception in 2006, many of which focus on the World’s most endangered primate species.”

“WHY DO WE SUPPORT AWELY?”

“We are pledging to help as much as we can key areas of bonobo conservation in the wild, and so sponsor Lola Ya Bonobo - the only bonobo sanctuary in the World - and Awely Greencaps.

Within Awely we find a group committed to working within the bonobos' home range to support local people and help them find alternative sources of protein and income generation that do not involved the bushmeat trade and so relieve pressure on the wild bonobo population.”
